As Canadians worry about the budget deficit, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty says that he is committed to not expanding the federal government's budget next year.
The Toronto Star reports that Flaherty was in Oakville to speak to the local chamber of commerce, where he told them that the government would do everything in its power to cut the deficit and not engage in risky spending measures. He also said that the government would avoid any tax increases on small business owners.
"To increases taxes on businesses now, as some of our opponents are proposing, would put hundreds of thousands of jobs in jeopardy at a time when our economy remains fragile," the minister said."This is not the time for dangerous and risky new spending schemes that will increase deficits and raise taxes."
Flaherty has made other news for small business in recent days. Along with Rona Ambrose, the minister of status of women, Flaherty announced a $40 million small business fund in a statement a few weeks ago.
