When starting a small business, focus on hiring intelligent and effective employees to help out

One of the most commonly held myths about starting a small business is that if an entrepreneur works hard enough and long enough hours, he or she will eventually succeed.

However, while hard work is required for a successful venture, an excessive work ethic can actually be damaging to small business growth - not to mention an entrepreneur's wellbeing and work-life balance - reported tech blog GigaOM.

"When things get tough, people work harder. When things are good, people work harder still to try to keep the 'good times rolling.' But this cycle of doom will ultimately fail as people burn out, get sick or simply quit," the website reported.

Instead, small business owners should focus on hiring intelligent and effective employees to help get the work done, not only to ensure the sanity of the small business owner but also the success and continuity of the business.

Another way to avoid stress-related burnout is to plan ahead for a variety of business scenarios, both short-term and long-term, the Wall Street Journal recently reported.
