Canadian small business owners should prioritise wellbeing, mental health

Entrepreneurs encouraged to pursue hobbies, exercise, get enough rest

Starting or running a small business can be one of the most stressful and demanding jobs there is, and entrepreneurs often find their mental health and personal wellbeing falls to the wayside for the sake of managing the company.

Yet being stressed out and overworked does the entrepreneur - and the business - no favors, so small business owners should prioritize their wellbeing, the Wall Street Journal advised.

To fight stress, entrepreneurs are encouraged to take mental health time, possibly by finding a hobby or carving out time to take a walk during the day.

Working out can also help, as studies show that exercise relieves stress, increases creativity and improves self-esteem, the article noted.

Entrepreneurs are also encouraged to get their rest - the Journal cited Cornell research showing that starting a small business can cause someone to lose more than 700 hours of sleep each year.

"If stress about the business routinely keeps you up at night, allow yourself a short period of 'worry time' prior to bed," the article advised small business owners. "Jot down everything you need to accomplish the next day, then let it go."

Prioritising wellbeing can help entrepreneurs avoid burnout, a phenomenon that can be quite common - and quite damaging to the business' health, GigaOM recently reported.
