Many savvy customers from all over Canada crossed into the United States for one of the most celebrated consumer holidays in North America - Black Friday.
CTV reports that there were many delays on border crossings throughout the country, as motorists waited to get deals in the States. In some parts of Ontario, drivers waited 30 minutes to get across, 20 minutes at the Sault Ste. Marie Crossing, and 15 minutes at the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. And while the shoppers excitedly waited to take advantage of the discount rates at national U.S. chains, the activity has the Canadian small business community is up in arms over a perceived lack of loyalty.
The Retail Council of Canada recently released a statement which reminded shoppers how important businesses were to the country's economy. "Merchants of all sizes donate a significant portion of their revenues to local non-profit groups, sports teams, cultural activities and other important causes," the group said in a statement. "Fewer sales mean less support for the people and causes in our communities that need it the most."
Small businesses can be vital to the overall economy. Many take pride in shopping locally and supporting those around them who make their businesses' home in Canada.
