Proposed legislation that would grant small business photographers better copyright protection has received support from the Canadian Photographers Coalition.
Newly introduced copyright reform legislation may be good news for Canadian small businesses that are involved in photography. The Canadian Photographers Coalition has voiced their support for the new proposed law, known as the Copyright Modernization Act.
The act would allow photographers a provision that has been held by all other content creators, but not photographers - the awarding of first ownership on commissioned works.
Coalition co-chair Andre Cornellier called the policy an important tool for "the promotion of Canada's culture and Canadians' creativity." In addition, he said the amendments "should allow Canadian small business photographers the opportunity to generate additional revenues for their commercial work."
Another CPC co-chair, Brain Boyle, praised Heritage Minister James Moore and Industry Minister Tony Clement for their commitment to ending the "inequity" faced by small business photographers.
The business of photography can be a successful one for ambitious entrepreneurs worldwide. The UK website Herts24 recently reported that the company Hannah Couzens Photography had been named the overall winner in the Federation of Small Businesses Hertforshire Small Business Awards.
