Canadians believe owning their business will give them more control over their destiny

After two years of economic trouble, one may think that many entrepreneurs would be weary of taking on new risks. A new survey conducted by Intuit shows the opposite - many Canadians entrepreneurs are actually considering starting a small business.

The survey found that 33 percent of Canadian entrepreneurs were interested in starting a new business in the next two years. Additionally, 22 percent said that the recession had no impact on their plan to start a new business, and some indicated that it may have even motivated them.

Entrepreneurs responded that the biggest motivator for starting their own business was the ability to control their own destinies. Some entrepreneurs were also motivated by not having to work for someone else and the belief that owning a small business will allow them to generate more money.

"Much of Canada's economic might comes from its small business backbone and, despite a market characterized by uncertainty, it's encouraging to see such gritty, entrepreneurial determination among the Canadian population," said Gene Lewis, country manager for Intuit Canada.

This may be a good time to start a new business - according to the International Money Fund, Canada's economy will bounce back the fastest of all the G-7 countries.
