The Canadian government recently made news for small business by investing in small and medium-sized businesses working in the field of science and technology.

The Minister of State for Democratic Reform and member of Parliment, Steven Fletcher, recently announced that the government would contribute funds to two Canadian firms in order to aid innovation in the country.

The first firm receiving funds is Boreal Genomics, which was given $273,000 in order to help map out DNA codes in blood. The company hopes to use the money to develop a portable device that can detect cancer and other diseases.

The second firm receiving money is Day4 Energy, which is working on a new photovoltaic cell and module which aims to increase efficiency and decrease the amount spent on manufacturing. The effort aims to increase use of solar energy.

The funds came out of the National Research Council of Canada's Industrial Research Assistance Program. The money was set aside by the Canadian government in order to help small businesses develop technology for global markets.

Other members of the Canadian government have been in the news when it comes to small business. The NetNewsLedger.com reports that Thunder Bay-Superior North MP and Small Business and Tourism Critic Bruce Hyer recently met with small business leaders in Thunder Bay in order to better understand their needs.
