Small business owners in Thunder Bay will soon have the opportunity to sit down with a member of Parliament in order to tell him how best to help local businesses.
The website NetNewsLedger.com recently reported that the special breakfast event will bring together Thunder Bay-Superior North MP and small business & tourism critic Bruce Hyer and small businesses to help them figure out ways to "thrive." Hyer said that he holds a unique position both as a member of the government and someone involved in small business.
"As both a local Member of Parliament and a small business owner, I understand the challenges small businesses face." said Hyer in an interview with the news source. "Taxes, government red tape and high credit card merchant fees are just some of the things that can hold small businesses back. But nurturing small business growth is especially important for jobs and the economy."
Hyer went onto say that small business was responsible for the "lion's share of sustained economic growth" in past decades.
Business leaders in Thunder Bay recently voiced opposition to the newly implemented Harmonized Sales Tax, the NetNewsLedger.com reports. According to New Democratic Party member Peter Tabuns, the new tax will mean "less money in the pockets of consumers," and "hurt small businesses."
