Spending more now may save money in the future
When it comes to buying a laptop for business the old adage holds true - you get what you pay for.
According to IDC Canada, Canadians have bought twice as many laptops as desktops this year, approximately 1.6 million, as cited in the Globe and Mail. And while many small business owners will simply look for the least expensive machine, according to many industry experts, there are more important things to look for.
Independent analyst Carmi Levy told the Globe and Mail that it's worth spending more money to get more value.
"Look for corporate-focused machines that are built to higher standards," Levy told the newspaper. "Magnesium or aluminum typically replaces cheap, flexible plastic in case and chassis construction."
Levy also stressed the importance of the computers' warranty. He told the news source that because computers used for work related operations tend to get a heavy amount of use, buying a more expensive computer with a longer warranty is generally worth it. Levy told told the news source that high end laptops "typically come with longer, more comprehensive warranties, as well as improved access to corporate support resources."
Small business owners were recently introduced to Microsoft Office 2010. In addition to Microsoft's usual suite of applications, the new software includes a series of web-based applications which
allow users to access documents from anywhere without compromising how they look.
