Expert advises SME owners to find market opportunity but also follow the trends

While it may seem like a tough time to start a small business, there are many opportunities for passionate entrepreneurs to succeed. To have the best possible results, small business owners should be unique - but also follow the trends, one expert wrote.

Entrepreneurship specialist Steve Strauss wrote in a recent column for USA Today that starting a small business requires looking for "vacuums and waves."

"To succeed in your business, you must strike a balance between being relevant and being different," he wrote.

Looking for vacuums means finding competitive opportunities where the market is not very saturated or strong, which can provide the most opportunities for a small business owner with a unique and valuable product or service.

Yet entrepreneurs should also "catch a wave when possible," he wrote. "If everyone is tweeting, there may be a very good reason for that. Stay relevant."

As Strauss suggests, social media may be one of the best waves for small business owners to catch due to its cost-effectiveness and immense popularity. Experts say that updating social media pages with fresh and relevant content can go a long way for small business branding and sales.
