The Canadian Federation of Independent Business in one Canadian city has asked the local government not to increase commercial taxes on businesses operating within its area.

The Telegram reports that the pro-business group has called on the city of St. John to keep the tax rate at the same level, saying that any increase could have a negative impact on how businesses are able to operate. Bradley George, the CFIB's provincial affairs director released a statement saying that the voice of the business community needed to be heard loud and clear.

"When you consider that business owners contribute much more than their fair share in taxes to the City of St. John's, and that they don’t receive the same level of service as its residents, our members should be hearing nothing about tax increases when council brings down its budget on Dec. 13,” the source quotes George as saying.

George made other headlines recently after he said that the government in Newfoundland and Labrador was licensing car dealers who weren't trustworthy. The CBC reports that he raised fears over whether those being licensed were "legit business owners."
