Businesses are increasing spending on mobile market as consumers use their phones to get online
According to the Mobile Marketing Association, the average mobile marketing budget is expected to increase by 26 percent per year.
Perhaps the figure is unsurprising given the growth in mobile internet users recently released from Nielsen Online.
The media measurement company reports that there are currently 3.9 million mobile internet users in Canada with most mobile web surfers looking at email, weather and conducting searches. Social networking use is another category driving mobile device use.
"The mobile market in Canada has grown rapidly since we first reported on the data in Q4 2008," said Eric Puterbaugh, director of client services for Nielsen Online.
With so many consumers flocking to mobile internet use, retailers, restaurants and other small businesses can move beyond text messaging to reach potential customers.
Mobile web users are logging into Facebook on their devices, routinely checking email and conducting searches on Google. All of these channels offer companies popular ways to reach some of their target customers with blog posts, Twitter updates and email newsletters or offers.
