In Ontario, the government is putting the focus on safety for small construction companies in the province.

The Daily Commercial News reports that the provincial government recently introduced the Work Safe Today - Go Home Tonight program in order to improve the safety culture at construction sites. Members of the government are hoping that by shifting the focus to safety, fewer injuries take place.

"The message is crystal clear: be safe or that x-ray of a broken hand, limb or cracked skull, could be yours," said labour minister Peter Fonseca, in an interview with the news source.

The campaign is being sponsored by the Ministry of Labor and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, both of whom hope that the increased awareness of workplace safety wil have the desired affect.

The news source reports that from 2005 to 2009, accidents at construction sites have made up 25 percent of all workplace fatalities. During the five-year period, 91 workers were killed while on the job.

Ontario politicians have been in the news recently after proposing a wage freeze for all public sector employees. The Ontario Finance Minister, Dwight Duncan, was recently praised by the CFIB after he said that it was inappropriate to raise wages when the country was struggling.
