Manpower staffing agency predicts SME owners will increase hiring this year

The recently revealed federal budget has left many concerned about the state of small business hiring due to the announcement that Employment Insurance Premiums will increase. Yet these concerns may be unfounded as a survey from staffing agency Manpower indicates that hiring may increase in the coming months with respect to this period last year.

The survey of about 1,900 employers showed that 17 percent plan to add staff between April and June. The results indicate a net positive outlook of 7 percent - six points ahead of the outlook last year.

The education and mining sectors seem to have the strongest hiring potential, both with an outlook of 15 percent. Transportation, construction, and public administration were also among the stronger fields for job prospects.

The results of this survey seem to coincide with the results of a recent Leger Marketing Omnibus and HRlearning survey that show 48 percent of SME owners believe recruiting good employees is critical to the success of their companies in the near future.
