The economy added 22,000 jobs in December.

The latest report from Statistics Canada shows that Canadian payroll employment increased by 22,000 jobs at the end of last year. According to CBC News, this is the fourth straight month of modest gains - which might indicate the economy is on the rise.

Statistics Canada reports that the payroll employment has been on an upward trend since August. The construction sector has been providing the most jobs, and depository credit intermediation has also shown a trend of monthly job gains since August.

Statistics Canada says these gains do not compare to the employment gains made in October 2008. Some sectors continued to show job losses. However, the pace of job losses in the manufacturing industries has slowed considerably since last August.

Additionally, December 2009 showed the fastest pace in year-over-year average weekly earnings since October 2008.

While these reports would indicate that the economy is improving - which is likely good news not just for the nation's unemployed but also for Canadian small business owners - another report indicates it may be a while before the country sees substantial employment gains.

According to a Grant Thornton survey, 56 percent of business owners said they do not see employment changing in their companies, even as profits and revenue increase.
