The number of motor vehicles sold in Canada during December 2010 dropped significantly from the previous month, according to a study released today by Statistics Canada.

Trucks and passenger cars alike saw lower sales numbers in December, the research organization said, although truck sales were lower, dropping by 6.9 percent compared to November. Car sales decreased slightly less, 2.2 percent, and North American-built vehicles bore the brunt of the downturn as import sales dipped by a smaller amount.

Nevertheless, in spite of December's losses, motor vehicle sales in Canada were up overall for 2010, according to the report, posting a 6.7 percent yearly increase from 2009. Truck sales surpassed those of passenger cars for the first time since the company began keeping records in 1946. The larger vehicles gained 18.4 percent over 2009's figures, accounting for 55 percent of sales, while cars actually declined slightly, by a little less than 5 percent.

The overall sales numbers are one of many indications that Canada's economy is continuing to recover from recent global economic turmoil, and the future looks reasonably bright for the country's businesses, experts say.
